How a Breakup Left Its Mark on NYC
Love it or hate it, graffiti is a vital part of what makes NYC an urban playground. Spend any time in the city, and you’ve likely spotted the ANNA ! tag, scrawled across subway walls, tucked into bathroom corners, and perched atop building facades. Once it catches your eye, it’s everywhere.
The artist behind ANNA ! is anonymous, even obscuring her face in online photos. Before adopting this name, she went by “$ex ¢uren¢¥.” After a major breakup, she tagged ANNA on the steps of her ex-boyfriend’s apartment, a bold, personal statement that would later spread across the city (ANNA !, Jetset Times).
Over time, ANNA ! became more than just a tag. It grew into a way to process emotions, assert identity, and leave a tangible mark on the city, transforming private expression into a public legacy.
Project Goal
