In fashion, camp is the art of intentional exaggeration. It is playful, referential, and rooted in performance rather than practicality. Camp embraces bold silhouettes, nostalgic or pop-culture cues, and a sense of humor.

At the SpongeBob movie premiere, Ice Spice received notoriety for her outfit, which strayed from the subject matter and targeted audience. We believe she could have leaned into camp and elements true to the beloved undersea cartoon, SpongeBob SquarePants, even more, while embracing the fun of the red carpet by referencing designers like Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Edda Gimnes, and Chanel accessories. The artist has referenced SpongeBob in the past, including at the 2025 Kids’ Choice Awards, where she wore a yellow bodycon dress paired with Moschino SpongeBob flower-print platforms, a look that left fans this time around both confused and hoping for something even bolder due to the music artist’s direct tie to the SpongeBob movie. Each look makes a nod to the beloved undersea character and long-running cartoon. For this project, I selected a few runway looks that align with the camp spirit.

In terms of my fashion background, I have experience as a costume designer for film projects, following both established and emerging designers. I also worked in theatre costume making and participated in Summer Intensive Studies at Parsons: The New School, building a foundation in both design and performance-based styling.
